Social Distancing at Picnic-Perfect Parks in Boston

With the spread of COVID-19 over the past couple of months, we’ve begun to adjust to our new normal. Whether that’s attending virtual yoga classes or watching Fall 2020 fashion shows from the comforts of our home, one thing is certain: we’ve all had to get creative and think outside the box about how we spend our leisure time social distancing.

As Bostonians, we have the privilege of living in a cultural hub defined by popular museums, neighborhoods, and restaurants. One of our favorite perks of living in such a historic city is the vibrant parks, many of which are located only steps away from The Sudbury. Pack your picnic basket (don’t forget your mask!) – here are our favorite picnic-perfect parks in and around Bulfinch Crossing with an updated list of open attractions (as of July 2020).

The Rose Kennedy Greenway

1. The Rose Kennedy Greenway

The closest park to The Sudbury also happens to be the newest park in Boston – and what we like to consider as our front yard. Spanning across the North End and Chinatown, the 1.5 mile Rose Kennedy Greenway brings life to the city’s downtown area and provides local residents the opportunity to enjoy grassy lawns perfect for picnics and sunbathing. Looking for entertainment? This park offers art displays, a seasonal beer garden, a carousel, water features, food trucks, and a farmer’s market.

Social distancing at The Boston Public Garden

2. The Boston Public Garden

The Boston Public Garden is one of the nation’s most loved parks for a reason. Built in 1837, this Victorian-era oasis was the first botanical garden in America. Located ten minutes from The Sudbury, the public garden is perfect for anyone looking for a scenic view while picnicking. Enjoy the changing seasons with an array of picturesque flowers and trees and lush green lawn. Come photo ready and embrace the many attractions the garden offers, including the famous bronze Make Way for Ducklings statues (and their seasonal, ever-changing accessories) and a lagoon filled with resident swans and mallards.

Social distancing at The Boston Common

3. The Boston Common

Walk five minutes from The Public Garden to the oldest park in America, The Boston Common. Boston natives and new residents alike love the Common for its Frog Pond (well known for ice skating in the winter months), a historical freedom trail, tennis courts (the perfect socially-distanced sport!), and more.

There’s also a dog park, allowing both you and your furry friend a chance to get outside and stretch your legs beyond The Sudbury dog run. When you’re tuckered out, grab a bite from Earl of Sandwich, find a tree to lay a blanket under, and take in the sights.

Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park

4. Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park

Enjoy the views of Boston’s waterfront at this popular North End park. Its large stretch of green grass is ideal for social distancing. Grab a drink on Tia’s outdoor patio, one of Boston’s favorite young professional happy hour destinations, or enjoy a delightful meal with a view at Joe’s American Bar & Grill. As the sun sets, the archway’s twinkling lights come alive and illuminate the Boston sky. It’s a moment you have to experience for yourself.

From historical parks to beautiful waterfront views, there’s so much to experience in and around Bulfinch Crossing. Grab your picnic basket and spend your summer afternoon social distancing with fresh air and a view.
